Faculty of Sports Science at Ningbo University began recruiting and cultivating master's degree students in the first-level discipline of physical education in 2003; it started recruiting doctoral students in this discipline in 2021. The degree program covers five research directions: sports humanities and sociology, sports human science, physical education and training, Chinese traditional ethnic sports, and sports mechanics. In the fifth round of discipline evaluations conducted by the Ministry of Education, it was ranked in the B tier; in the "2023 ShanghaiRanking’s Academic Ranking of World Universitiesoft in Sports", it was ranked 201st to 300th, and 4th in China. Currently, it boasts the "Ningbo University Research Center for Sports Economics," a key research base for sports social sciences under the General Administration of Sport of China, and the "Scientific Talent Training Base for Winter Sports for Disabled Persons" under the China Sports Administration Center for Disabled Persons. It has established the Ningbo University Research Academy of Grand Health, and in deep collaboration with the listed company "ANTA," founded the "Faculty of Sports Science at Ningbo University - ANTA Children's Joint Sports Research Laboratory." It has also co-established the "Ningbo Institute of Sports and Medicine Integration" with Ningbo Second Hospital. Furthermore, it has led the formation of the "China-Central and Eastern Europe University Sports Education and Research Alliance," which involves over 30 universities both domestically and internationally. In 2017, it founded the international journal "Physical Activity and Health," which has become the first academic journal from Ningbo University indexed in the Scopus database and entered the Q1 zone of Scopus in 2023.

Educational innovation bases for graduate students have been established with enterprises such as "ANTA" and "Yilijia," and stable, long-lasting partnerships have been forged with the Sports Project Management Center of the General Administration of Sport of China and provincial/municipal sports bureaus. These platforms and bases fully support the cultivation of sports master's students, elevating their research proficiency and practical abilities. The school's reputation and educational standards rank among the top in the province. Aligned with its training objectives and plans, the degree program has gradually developed professional cultivation advantages centered around distinctive directions such as school sports teaching practice, competitive sports technology research, and sports industry innovation services. Over the past three years, the growth rate of applicants for professional degree programs has exceeded 80%, with a 100% first-choice application rate.
